Hypnotherapy & Hypnosis Explained

Hypnotherapy & Hypnosis

Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy that utilises the power of your mind, through hypnosis, to promote long-lasting, profound change. Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool that can be used to gain control over unwanted habits, emotions and behaviours.

If you haven’t tried hypnotherapy before, this page will help you understand what hypnotherapy is, how it works and the experience of hypnosis.

What can Hypnotherapy effectively treat?

The majority of my patients visit me for help with weight loss and management; fears and phobias; anxiety, stress and depression; negative habits such as smoking; and to increase self confidence or performance. There are hundreds of issues that hypnotherapy can treat.

Hypnotherapy can support you through the process of profound transformation, allowing you to address the deeper aspects of your mind and your thinking. This helps you to overcome your challenges and begin a new, positive direction in your life.

Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a very natural state of mind, one that we have all experienced countless times, and yet it’s so subtle, we barely even notice it.

We experience hypnosis when we’re watching television and engrossed in the storyline; when we’re daydreaming, listening to music or driving. Have you ever arrived home and not remembered the journey?

These are all natural states of hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is an induced state of hypnosis that is controlled by a hypnotherapist.

Hypnotherapy utilises this natural state of mind to induce feelings of calm, relaxation, confidence, focus, optimism, clarity, and much more.

Our subconscious mind

It’s important to understand that we have two parts to our mind: a conscious mind and a subconscious mind.

Our conscious mind is responsible for our logical thinking, whereas our subconscious mind is responsible for our emotions, behaviours and all of our automatic bodily functioning.

A hypnotherapist works directly with your subconscious mind to help you create the changes that you want in your life.

The power of your mind

Our thoughts have the power to shape our experiences. The way we feel can have a direct effect upon our life experiences, and the way in which we feel about ourselves effects our self confidence.

Therefore having the life that we want very much depends on our mindset, our thoughts, and our beliefs. Our pattern of thinking can be changed with the use of hypnotherapy.

The hypnosis experience

If you have not experienced a hypnotherapy session before it might be useful to know that it is a very pleasant experience. You will be guided by my voice to experience a very comfortable state of mind which can be described as a subtle altered state, which we call hypnosis.

During your sessions I will gently, and safely, guide you into your own natural relaxed state of mind which allows for greater access into your creative subconscious mind. This is the part of the mind that is responsible for creating all of your positive changes.

I use calming music while you relax in a comfortable reclining couch, clients are often surprised at how easily they drift into a pleasant relaxation.

You are fully alert and aware at all times, we do not put you into a sleep or in anyway is this experience like sleeping. You are actively and fully involved in the sessions and will be able to recall and remember everything that you experience during the session, often clients are asked to communicate during a hypnosis session. This is ideal for any client that may be concerned about feeling out of control, and reassures them that the hypnotherapist is not in control of them at all.

In the last part of the session we discuss your experience during hypnosis which is a way of discovering the meaning and purpose of the session, and also to decide which aspect to focus on in the following session.

FAQs about Hypnotherapy

Will I be in control?

Hypnotherapy often feels very relaxing, we have a common misconception that we will feel out of control or put to sleep. Hypnotherapy is very different to stage hypnosis which is very entertaining.

In a typical hypnotherapy session you will feel aware alert and in control at all times, yet pleasantly relaxed. A hypnotherapist cannot control your behaviour or responses. You are in full control of yourself at all times.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Yes as an experienced and trained hypnotherapist, I have helped hundreds of people from all ages and walks of life to experience hypnosis safely and effectively. The art is to get to know you as an individual this helps me to understand how best to help you to experience hypnosis.

Is hypnotherapy suitable for me?

If you have struggled to overcome unwanted feelings or break a bad habit, and feel that you lack sufficient will power to succeed long-term, hypnotherapy could be very suitable for you. Hypnotherapy isn’t suitable for those with severe mental health issues, or have a psychopathic personality, schizophrenia or are debilitated. Visually impaired people can be difficult to hypnotise, and it is not possible to hypnotise deaf people.

How many sessions will I need?

Hypnotherapy can bring about a fairly quick transformation. For most, changes occur within 2-3 sessions. However each person and issue is unique: some patients require less sessions, some more. We can discuss this during your initial, free, consultation.

Appointments are often scheduled weekly or fortnightly for best results.

Free, no-obligation consultations

Hypnotherapy sessions at Waterfall Therapies begin with a free, no-obligation initial telephone consultation, which gives you the opportunity to have an informal chat to discuss the treatment and answer any questions you may have. We can also discuss your goals, and any difficulties or challenges you have been experiencing.

Consultations can last between 15-30mins; and are a crucial part of our hypnotherapy process which helps us to create your tailor made session.
